Musicians You Should Know About: #8-Mother, Mother

Well, well, well, look what the coast spit out…..Mother, Mother is an indie rock band originally from Quadra Island off the east coast of Vancouver, consisting of five members Ryan Guldemond on guitar and vocals, Molly Guldemond on vocals and keyboard, Jasmin Parkin on keyboard and vocals, Ali Siadat on drums, and Jeremy Page on bass.

In 2005 the band independently released a self-titled debut under the name Mother (singular) later adding the second Mother and re-releasing the same album with the label Last Grand Records in 2007. As it would seem either adding the second noun to their name or being backed by a major label did the trick.

Since then they’ve gone on to release O My Heart in 2008, Eureka in 2011, and most recently The Sticks in 2012.

From the humble beginnings of a brother recruiting his sister and her friend to sing back up, grew an unstoppable 5 piece adding and subtracting members along the way. Mother, Mother really has the Vancouver Province to thank for rating them one of 2007’s bands to watch. From a simple column name mention grew a wild fire that led them to open for major acts like K’nann and the Wallin’ Jenny’s, touring as an opener through Aus, and playing to a sold out Montreal International Jazz Fest.

Mother, Mother has almost an electronic feel without that gritty dragging on your nerves you’d usually get from anything labeled ‘electronic’. They have an effervescent vibe that has an almost childlike whimsy, backed by lyrics with a dark lacing. I honestly can’t think of another group that would provide a great ‘if you like them….you’ll love…..’ which means one of to things 1) You’ll find no semblance in their music or 2) You’ll love the heck out of the fact that this sounds nothing like anything already in your library.

Ps Mother, Mother’s fan group is called the MMMob….they defiantly get style points for that.
