Musicians You Should Know About: #4-Juno Addition
The Juno’s are coming up this week in beautiful Winnipeg, Manitoba. So, I thought this would be a great opportunity to tip our hat’s to a few awesome Canadian artists being recognized at this year’s show, and who should defiantly be making their way into your listening collection.
1. Arcade Fire
Nominated for Juno Fans Choice Award//Single of the Year//Album of the Year//Group of the Year//Song Writer of the Year// & Alternative Album of the Year
Arcade Fire is an Indie Rock Band hailing from Montreal, Quebec. The 6 (Yes, half a dozen) piece group has an incredibly commanding stage presence, not only because of their size, but because of over the top performance style, including their alter ego, bobble head band Reflektors, making appearances.
4 Studio Albums
Reflektor-which they are currently on tour with
2. Serena Ryder
Nominated for Juno Fans Choice Award// Single of the Year// Album of the Year//Artist of the Year//Song Writer of the Year
Serena Ryder first garnered attention in 2007 with a ballad called ‘Weak in the Knees’, but it wasn’t till a few years later she earned the name recognition her talent deserves. Serena busted on to the scene in 2012 with her monstrous hit Stompa’. She took everyone, on every chart, from pop to punk for a ride with her killer vocals, upbeat bass line, and catchy lyrics.
While she may be known most notably for Stompa’ there are many other things to consider when talking about the amazing talent that spews from her. For example Serena possesses a three octave vocal range, is a mezzo-soprano, and while she has all the makings of an opera star her gritty, raw Janis Joplin like sound is what translates to audible palette. She plays guitar, piano, mandolin, ukulele, harmonica, banjo, clarinet, drums, and bass. Plus she’s an accomplished visual artist.
PLUS she’s co-hosting this year’s Juno Award Show on Sunday March 30th, 2014.
This girl has more talent in her pinky than most of us in our entire bodies. We will for sure be coming back to her for a more in depth profile.
3. Walk Off The Earth
Nominated for Juno Fans Choice Award// Group of the Year//Pop Album of the Year//Producer of the Year
Walk off the Earth is a little more poppy than would usually make this list, but that being said with their upbeat harmony it makes it hard not you instantly tap your toes, and after all isn’t that the sign of good music; Something that can reach you on a primal level?
This 5 piece band started their sensation of a career by
copying others, covering sorry, covering others to become YouTube sensations, sans a label. In 2012 they signed with Columbia Records and started promoting their own uncommon brand of ukulele and Theremin based tunes.
One of the coolest things about this band though is that they have their very own in band producer. Gianni Luminati (Giancarlo Nicassio) who plays 12 different instruments, he ALSO produces the band’s music and videos. Talk about multi-talented. In fact the whole band is well versed in the art of music making in many manners.
- Gianni Luminati – bass, guitar, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, drums, vocals, theremin, xylophone, piano, cajon, cello, bongos
- Sarah Blackwood – guitar, bass, ukulele, banjo, glockenspiel, percussion, xylophone, piano, vocals
- Ryan Marshall – guitar, bass, trumpet, piano, harmonica, vocals, ukulele, mandolin
