Musicians You Should Know About: #3-Of Monsters & Men

What started as an addition to a solo project has progressed into the chart topping, world sensation Of Monsters & Men.

This 5 piece band from Iceland got a start when lead singer Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttir was working on her solo project Songbird. First starting out with only four members later adding and subtract until they got the current mix, they jived their sound and it just made sense to keep going.

In 2010 they entered and won the annual Músíktilraunir battle of the bands (I won’t even pretend like I can say that). Which started them on a whirlwind journey to release an EP Into the Woods, followed by their debut album My Head Is an Animal; which topped charts worldwide. Reaching No. 1 on Australian, UK, and US countdowns.

The lead single was a song called little talks (video below) that much like the band members boasts an air of simplicity with crazy underling messages. *Spoiled Alert* Go listen to Little Talks before you continue reading this, and try to get a sense of what you think it’s about.

In an interview once Of Monsters & Men said that the song Little Talks is meant to be about a widow who misses her deceased husband (the female voice) and her husband answering her back from the grave (the male voice). Crazy right?! Now go listen again, see if you catch it.

If you crave music that will make you do a double ear take, pump you up with awesome instrumentals, and then haunt you with lyrics, oh and is NOTHING like the only other Icelandic musician I could think of Bjork-then you’ll dig Of Monsters & Men.
