In a Hole in a Hurry.

The Olds Grizzlys find themselves in an early hole in the AJHL’s Semi Finals. The Brooks Bandits showed no sign of rust after their First Round bye and rolled to 2 Straight Wins over Olds on Friday and Saturday to open the Best-of-Seven Series on Home Ice and now, for the 1st time since 2012 the Sports Complex is home to Second Round AJHL Action.

  • While the Scores from Game #1 and #2 aren’t exactly flattering to the Olds Grizzlys (7-2 & 5-1 for a 2 Game Total of 12-3) in my opinion they aren’t exactly an accurate representation of the what took place in Brooks:

Game #1: The Grizzlys allow 3 Goals in the 1st 8-Minutes of the Contest and then allow another 3 Goals in the 1st minute and 30 Seconds (in less than a 60 second span) of the 3rd Period.

Game #2: The Grizzlys allow 4 Goals in the 1st 10-Minutes of the Contest (just over a 7-minute span)

The Bandits are good, but they’re not THAT good. No team in this league is that dominant to be able score 10 Goals in a 16.5 minute span … that is, without getting some help from the Opposition. The fact is that the Grizzlys weren’t great in those 16.5 minutes … truth be told, they were bad. Missed assignments, Penalty Troubles, Bad Goals and a Lack of Focus and Energy all helped the Bandits during their Scoring Surge. The Good News is outside of those 16.5 minutes, when the Grizzlys were playing like they played against Okotoks, it’s a 2-2 103.5 Minute Span. Simply put, the Grizzlys need to find a way to get back to the near 60 minute efforts we saw in Games #1, #4 & #5 of Round #1.

  • The Grizzlys are allowing an average of 6 goals per Game Vs. Brooks … Again, Brooks isn’t that Good. The Bandits averaged 3.27 Goals per Game in the Regular Season, 2nd in the South next to the Drumheller Dragons.

  • Considering that the Grizzlys managed to only surrender 3 Power Play Goals in 19 Bandits’ Opportunities (7 in Game #1 & 12 in Game #2) they P.K. has been okay, clicking at 84.2%, down from 90% Vs. Okotoks. For the record; The Bandits Power Play during the Regular Season was Ranked 3rd in the AJHL at 19.75% … 3% lower than Okotoks.

All in all ... I'm saying the Grizzlys can be better. Yes, the Bandits are a good team and by no means was this series going to result in the Grizzlys sweeping Brooks en route to the South Division Finals but the Grizzlys have made life easy on the Bandits so far and will need to be much better if they hope to get back to Brooks before the Fall.
