For the 3rd year in a row and for the 4th time in 6 years the Olds Grizzlys will face-off against the Okotoks Oilers in the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Postseason. The playoff past between these two teams favors the ‘Black & Gold’ but after last year’s 1st Round defeat to the Oilers, anything prior is ancient history.
Here’s what you need to know about this year’s match-up ...

KEYS TO SERIES FOR THE OLDS GRIZZLYS:
1) The Olds Grizzlys have a distinct size advantage over the Okotoks Oilers (Grizzlys AVG. Height: 6’0” ; AVG. Weight 184.2lbs --- Okotoks AVG. Height: 5’10” ; AVG. Weight 174.5lbs) and will need to employ a relentless forcheck and use that size to win the board battles.
2) Disciplined Approach. The Grizzlys will need to find a way to use the aforementioned size while staying out of the penalty box … Okotoks had the 2nd best power play in the AJHL during the regular season but preformed even better with the man advantage versus the Grizzlys scoring an average of 2 power play goals per game in the 6 games during the regular season while clicking at 41.3%.
3) The 3 C’s: Consistency, Compete and Confidence.
This will mark the 3rd playoff meeting between the Grizzlys and the Oilers in the last years and 4th meeting in the last 6 years. History favors the Grizzlys in the second-season with the Black & Gold sporting a 2 series-to-1 lead but the Grizzlys’ series wins came in the Alberta Junior Hockey League’s Second-Round, a Best-of-7 affair while it’s the Oilers who sport a 1-0 record VS Olds in the AJHL’s Best-of-5 First-Round. That series came last year, where the Oilers bounced the Grizzlys in 5 games.
Interesting Note: The Olds Grizzlys, who much like this year finished 7th in the South, forced a 5th and deciding game against the Oilers, who again much like this year finished 2nd in the South without winning a single game vs. the Oilers during the regular season in 2012-13.
Grizzlys Head Coach Brett Hopfe’s Playoff Record is impressive considering he’s been at the helm of a Grizzlys who have finished 6th Place (half-season) and a 7th Place in the South Division during his tenure: 9 – 10.
While the Oilers will still be a formidable foe in this year’s 1st Round Match Up, the Olds Grizzlys won’t have to deal with arguably the best player in the AJHL this year … Chris Collins picked up 8 points in 5 games VS the Olds Grizzlys in last year’s post-season.
