Olds Mavericks Exceed All Expectations By Winning Tier 2 Championship

The Olds Mavericks had a 1 and 2 record during round robin play as part of the provincial tournament in Lethbridge, but they tied with Sherwood Park for second place and beat them in a tie breaker. That moved Olds on to play the host Lethbridge Barraccudas in the gold medal match. The 'Cudas had a 3 and 0 round robin record, however that did not stop the Mavs from winning a nail-biter 11-10 to capture the tier 2 junior B title.

Olds Mavericks can once again call themselves provincial junior lacrosse champions.
Mavs Head Coach Andy Sweetman says to win in the playoffs, get to provincials, then take home the gold medal in their first year as a tier 2 Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League team was quite amazing.
Olds, Sherwood Park, and Lakeland were all tied with a 1-2 record after Saturday night, but with some tie-breaker math the Mavericks advanced to the finals.
Sweetman says with seven new midget players joining the Mavs, the team worked on chemistry all weekend.
He says with a couple changes they caught the Lethbridge Barracudas off guard and won the provincial championship game 11-10 on Sunday.
Sweetman says the junior lacrosse program in Olds has plenty of momentum behind it right now.
The Mavericks finished the 2016 regular season in second place with a 13 and 3 record. As a result they earned a first round playoff bye. In the RMLL tier 2 semi-finals Olds swept the Calgary Axemen in a best of three series at the SportsComplex.
In 2015, the Mavs won the tier 3 junior provincial lacrosse championship by defeating the Olds Stingers in High River.
