Spartan Senior Boys Searching For Wins At Mid-Way Point Of Season

Olds High School's senior boys soccer team reaches the mid-way mark of its
season this week.

OHS dropped its first 3 games of the year losing to Hunting Hills, Lacombe's
Central Alberta Christian High School and Lindsay Thurber.

Despite the slow start, Spartans Head Coach Mark Oxer says they've definitely
got a group of players on the team this year who are passionate about the
game.

{audio_http://mm.gmstatic.net/62/348179.mp3}

Oxer says they need to place at least 4th out of the 7 team league in order
to qualify for next month's finals tournament at Edgar Soccer Park in Red
Deer.

{audio_http://mm.gmstatic.net/62/190888.mp3}

Oxer along with Aaron Baker from the Deer Meadow School soccer academy are
the coaches of the Spartan boys senior team.

It has been a taxing year for Oxer. He was the coach who brought Olds
College's men's & women's soccer teams in to the ACAC, while also running
the Broncos Futsol program.

The reward for him will be seeing the first local high school student move
across the Community Learning Campus to join the Broncos.

{audio_http://mm.gmstatic.net/62/117423.mp3}

The relationship between Olds High School and Olds College should continue to
be fruitful in the future as Oxer says there are some bright young players in
the community.

{audio_http://mm.gmstatic.net/62/724321.mp3}

The Olds Spartans soccer schedule sees them play at Notre Dame this Thursday (May 16th) at 4:15pm.

They'll visit H.J. Cody in Sylvan Lake on Tuesday before concluding the
regular season with home games at Elks Field on May 29th versus Innisfail and May 31st against
Lacombe.

    The quest for a 5th straight provincial championship and an 8th zone
title in a row begins for the Sundre High School Track & Field team
next week.

Coach Judy Jackson says the dedication of their athletes has been a major factor in SHS' success.

{audio_http://mm.gmstatic.net/62/787575.mp3}

Jackson - who teaches phys ed and english - says Sundre High's overall
balance has helped them consistently score well at provincials.

{audio_http://mm.gmstatic.net/62/520381.mp3}

She has high hopes for 2 of her senior boys in the middle distance running events.

{audio_http://mm.gmstatic.net/62/851356.mp3}

Jackson says Olds High School's Track & Field Coach Adam Hogarth
has helped Sundre introduce pole vaulting to its program. Hogarth ran a
clinic last Saturday (May 4th) and has been assisting her for several
seasons. She explains what else they've been doing to prepare for the
upcoming season.

{audio_http://mm.gmstatic.net/62/692581.mp3}

According to Jackson, at the first Chinook's Edge School Division
county meet on Friday May 15th she will be looking to see her team place
in the top 2.

{audio_http://mm.gmstatic.net/62/167702.mp3}

Jackson has enjoyed spending the past 26 years in Sundre coaching high school track & field.

{audio_http://mm.gmstatic.net/62/278704.mp3}

During her own era as a competitor at the University of Calgary and
with the Calgary Spartans, Jackson's favorite event was the hurdles. She
trained under the direction of ex-Olympic Coach John Cannon who is now
with Calgary International.
