For the first time ever Olds High School played host to the senior girls & boys ASAA provincial basketball championships with games held at the Ralph Klein Centre, the Frank Grisdale Hall Gymnasium and at the Didsbury High School gym.
The 3-A senior boys and girls provincial high school basketball championships were decided in Olds between March 17-19th.
The boys championship game saw the Chestermere Lakers defeat the Strathcona Christian Eagles from Sherwood Park 97-94.
In the girls title game Taber's W.R. Myers Rebels beat Medicine Hat's Monsignour McCoy Colts 67-47.
Kent Lorencz, Head Coach of the Olds High School senior girls team, shares some of the comments he heard about the job the Spartans did of hosting the provincial basketball tournament and discusses whether he thinks an event like this could come back to Olds in the future.
Lorenz was pleased to see his team rebound from an opening game loss to win Pool C by getting by Bowness 62-56 in overtime to finish with a 2 and 1 record.
The Spartan boys lost their first two games before finishing the year with a 71-66 victory over Holy Rosary.
