Canadian cattle & hog producers are pleased with the WTO\'s ruling on Friday, which saw them side with Canada in a dispute with the US over the labelling of exports. Dave Solverson with the Alberta Beef Producers comments on the announcement.
The World Trade Organization sided with Canada on Friday after a 3-year dispute with the US over the labelling of beef and hog exports.
The Canadian Cattlemen's Association initiated the challenge, complaining that a US requirement for country-of-origin labelling on meat packaging discourages imports and adds to export costs.
Dave Solverson with the Alberta Beef Producers says that this ruling will allow Canada's producers to fully integrate with our biggest trade partner.
Solverson was on hand as the announcement was made at the Soderglen Ranch outside of Airdrie.
The Canadian Cattlemen's Association estimates that the US move had lowered Canadian cattle values by about 100-dollars a head.
