Town of Olds Plans 2019 National Indigenous Peoples Day Activities

Across Canada, National Indigenous Peoples Day will be celebrated on Friday, June 21st. Meantime, this will be the third year for the cultural event in the town of Olds. Olds council has officially declared June 18th, 2019 as National Indigenous Peoples Day in the community.

The decision was made at the regular council meeting on Monday, May 13th.

Chair of Olds National Indigenous Peoples Day Elder John Sinclair says the day includes cultural education for students in the region.

Olds Institute Executive Director Mitch Thompson says Olds Indigenous Connections is a grassroots group who host cultural activities plus discussions on truth and reconciliation.

Ahead of the big event, the Walk for Common Ground will also be coming through Olds on Monday, June 10th.

Thompson says this is a movement that will leave from Edmonton and travel to Calgary.

He adds, they hope to have schools in Olds and area to join the group of about 30 walkers along the way.

Activities on June 18th in Olds will take place in Centennial Park or inside the Olds Big Rack Cow Palace if there is inclement weather.
