The Mountain View Moccasin House Society

The society's goal is to offer cultural events for everyone in the community and to become a Friendship Centre.

A new society in Olds is in the beginning stages and is partnering with Olds College and the Broncos.

Co-Founder of the Mountain View Moccasin House Society Joanne Reeves says they are in the process of registering a non-profit society that would eventually become a Friendship Centre.

Reeves came up with the idea with her cousin Kendra. They both live in Olds and their mothers are from Treaty 8.

Reeves says the closest Friendship Centres are in Rocky Mountain House, Red Deer, or Calgary.

Currently the society has a space at Olds College. She talks about their partnership with the Olds College Broncos Men's volleyball team.

Reeves says the team is working on reconciliation through sport, which is another fantastic way to heal the relationship between Canada and Indigenous Peoples.

On Saturday, November 30th the Broncos play at 1 and 3 O'clock and donations for the Mountain View Moccasin House Society will be accepted. There will also be a silent auction and raffle.

Reeves explains how the society came to be.

Reeves adds, Olds has been very supportive with this initiative.

She says the society will also be collaborating with Olds Indigenous Connections and Indigenous Peoples Day in June.
