Olds Mayor Attends AUMA President's Summit On Municipal Finances

The Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) held its 2020 President's Summit on Municipal Finances in Edmonton last month.

The Olds Mayor was able to attend last month's AUMA President's Summit on Municipal Finances.
Alberta Urban Municipalities Association President Barry Morshita and Kaycee Madu, Alberta's Minister of Municipal Affairs were among the other participants at the summit.
Michael Muzychka says it was absolutely invaluable to have a bunch of municipalities collaborate and brainstorm on some creative ways to mitigate and meet some of the challenges to find room in their budget to cover the shortfall.
The AUMA President's Summit took place on January 22nd and 23rd in Edmonton, according to Mayor Muzychka.
Out of the discussions, AUMA signalled solidarity with the Rural Municipalities of Alberta - who recently shared that approximately $173 million dollars in property taxes on oil and gas properties are currently unpaid to rural municipalities.

AUMA President Barry Morshita stated - since municipalities currently have no legislative tool to collect these owed taxes - they urge the provincial government to update the Municipal Government Act so that municipal property taxes can be collected from oil and gas properties in the event of bankruptcy or receivership.
