Olds High School - 2019 Spartan Football Banquet

It is not something that occurs every year, but a special award was handed out as the Olds Spartans 2019 high school football season wrapped up with the annual banquet on Tuesday, November 5th.

Another year of Spartan football was reflected upon during the awards banquet on Tuesday, November 5th in the commons area at Olds High School.

While the results have not been there in terms of wins recently, the program continues to provide a meaningful learning experience for students at OHS.

This year also included an iron man performance from one of the players on the team. Kyle Krause was the recipient of a special honour which is  not handed out every year. Krause is this year's Spartan award winner after participating in all but a handful of snaps this season. The 16 year old stayed on the field for offense, defense and special teams. The few snaps Krause missed only happened because he suffered an injury.

Krause just liked being involved.

He was the left side slot receiver on offense and right side half back on defense. Krause talks about winning the prestigious Spartan award.

The Spartans finished this year without a victory. However, Krause will be one of 8 grade 11 students who is ready to lead the team into the 2020 season.

Krause enjoyed another year of learning from a well respected coaching staff at OHS.

Coach Aaron Stromsmoe says Kyle exemplifies everything that a teammate should be and his performance is something the Spartans coaches have never seen before.

He looks forward to seeing what a large group of potential returning players can do next year.

Stromsmoe had assistance with the Offensive Coordinator duties this season with new arrival Yannick L'Abbe.

Stromsmoe also worked with the quarterback and running backs. Former Spartan Bryce Wachtler is another recent addtion to the coaching staff alongside long time Head Coach George Grant and Defensive coordinator Lyle Groves.

Yannick L'Abbe explains how he ended up getting a chance to coach in Olds for 2019.

L'Abbe breaks down his football resume.

He enjoyed getting involved with the Spartans offense.

As pictured below, the ex-Edmonton Eskimo was thrust into a guest speaking role at the OHS football banquet.

While where he lands a job after graduating from Olds College may impact his ability to be back next fall, L'Abbe thanked his fellow coaches for offering him such a great opportunity at OHS.

The list of award winners for 2019 included:

Rookie of the Year - Jesse Rylance

Top Lineman - Cayden Andrew

Top Defensive Player - Ryan Petersen

Top Offensive Player - Damian Pedersen

MVP - Marcus Lorenz

Spartan Award - Kyle Krause

Player Contributing The Most With The Least Recognition - Tyler Honeyman

3 members of the Spartans have also been selected as Big Sky Conference All-Stars, according to Head Coach George Grant. They are defensive lineman Nick Lonsberry, receiver Damian Pedersen and running back Logan Wachtler.

4 grade 12s will be graduating from the Spartan football program - Michael McLean, Liam Brown, Logan Wachtler and Marcus Lorenz.

OHS went 2-5 in 2016, 0-8 in 2017 and 1-7 in 2018. This year they were 0-7 in the regular season and then suffered a 49-6 playoff loss to the Wolverines in Canmore. Canmore lost 28-3 to the Drumheller Titans in the BSC title game. Both those teams advance to the provincial playoffs with Canmore facing Willow Creek from Claresholm, while Drumheller meets W.R. Myers from Taber.
