Trailing the 2-time defending league champions oh-three in a best of seven series might seem like an impossible task. However, a special group of players and coaches were able to help the Mountain View Colts erase that deficit versus the Red Deer Vipers and complete a colossal comeback in their HJHL Northern Division Semi-Final.
It is not something that happens very often in any sport, at any level but the Mountain View Colts have rallied from an oh-three deficit to win their best of seven Heritage Junior Hockey League playoff series with the Red Deer Vipers.
As heard on ROCK 104.5 on Saturday night, Mitch Visser had the skate away play that capped off the Colts colossal comeback.
Not only had they trailed oh-three in the series, but they were down 3 to nothing to the Vipers more than mid-way through Game 7.
Mountain View won Game 4 by the score of 4-2. Then the Colts took Games 5, 6 and 7 by identical scores of 5-4 in overtime.
Visser - who is a 19 year old forward from Didsbury - says the Colts were determined to turn around the series versus Red Deer.
Visser had been suspended for Game 4, but then made his mark on the comeback by scoring the OT winners in Game 5 and 7.
19 year old defenceman Laine Rothenbusch from Didsbury says the "Colts are here to stay" was a bit of a rallying cry for them in the series.
Rothenbusch scored twice in Game 7. Alan Klinck also tallied and Kale Wright netted the tying goal that sent it to overtime with just over 5 minutes remaining in the third period.
The Colts incredible comeback is made even sweeter by the fact that they did it versus the Red Deer Vipers. The Vipers are the 2-time defending HJHL champions - and they had eliminated Mountain View from the playoffs in each of the past 2 seasons.
The only other example 96.5 CKFM could find of a reverse sweep happening in the Heritage Junior Hockey League playoffs was back in 2013 when - coincidentally - it was the Red Deer Vipers who rallied from oh-three down to knock out the Blackfalds Wranglers.
In the history of North American professional sports it has only happened 5 times. The 4 examples from the NHL are the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs, the 1975 New York Islanders, the 2010 Philadelphia Flyers and the 2014 Los Angeles Kings. Major League Baseball's lone reverse sweep happened in 2004 when the Boston Red Sox rallied against their arch rivals - the New York Yankees.
The Colts will continue their post-season push when the Northern Division Final against the Thunder starts this week. 96.5 CKFM will have live play-by-play coverage of Game 1 from Airdrie on Tuesday at 7:30.
Mountain View has now advanced to the HJHL's Northern Division Final in 4 of the past 5 seasons. The Colts won their first league championship in franchise history in 2016.
