Jan Thompson says she loves the town and wants to share in the responsibility of caring for, as well as shaping, the community for those who reside here. She is one of seven candidates who have now entered the by-election race for a vacant seat at the Olds council table.
Jan Thompson is one of seven candidates running in the municipal by-election for the one empty seat on town of Olds council.
The 62 year old has lived in Olds for 31 years along with her husband and two daughters, who they raised here until university. She says her grandchildren now come to visit the town often.
Thompson worked in municipal government for 11.5 years - including a 2.5 year stint with the town of Olds in planning & development, bylaw & operations.
Thompson has attended this month's council meetings in order to get up to speed ahead of the by-election.
She has also worked for the town of Carstairs, the town of Bowden and Olds College.
Thompson is semi retired and has lots of flexibility with part-time job as an executive assistant for an agricultural-based company in order to meet the requirements of a council position.
She is in her second term as Vice Chair on the town's Municipal Planning Commission and is excited for the by-election on January 20th of 2020.
Chinook's Edge School Division's Superintendent says a new fee of $200 dollars for rural bus riders who are more than 2.4 kilometers from their school will be implemented this fall. Kurt Sacher notes it is part of a new cost-recovery fee model which will also include an increase from just over $300 dollars to $500 dollars for in-town riders.
The Olds RCMP Detachment, Olds Rural Crime Watch, Torrock Towing, as well as the Olds & District Chamber of Commerce are sponsoring a special event this week. Coffee with the Olds RCMP runs from 3 until 5pm on Wednesday, January 22nd at the Olds Auction Mart Cafe.
Donations for the Mountain View Food Bank were collected on Saturday, January 18th at the Westview Co-op food store in Carstairs. An RCMP Cruiser was Crammed plus the back of a Co-op SUV. When you combine the Carstairs totals with the Cram the Cruiser results from Olds on January 11th, over 5380 pounds of food has been gathered up for the Mountain View Food Bank this month thanks to the Westview Co-op, local RCMP and the generous donations from members of the community.
The first general meeting of the new year for members of the Didsbury & District Chamber of Commerce is coming up on Wednesday, January 22nd at 7pm at the Train Station. Diana Steer, Executive Director of the Didsbury Chamber, says it is a great time to network.
